Description:

The bestselling first edition of this influential resource has been incorporated into the curriculum at forward thinking colleges and universities, a leading vocational technical institute, many in-house corporate continuous improvement approaches, and the United Nations’ headquarters.

Providing a complete and accessible introduction to process maps, The Basics of Process Mapping, Second Edition raises the bar on what constitutes the basics. Thoroughly revised and updated to keep pace with recent developments, it explains how relationship maps, cross-functional process maps (swimlane diagrams), and flowcharts can be used as a set to provide different views of work.

New in the Second Edition:

  • Four new chapters and 75 new graphics
  • An introduction to the concepts of flow and waste and how both appear in knowledge work or business processes
  • A set of measures for flow and waste
  • A discussion of problematic features of knowledge work and business processes that act as barriers to flow
  • Seven principles* and 29 guidelines for improving the flow of knowledge work
  • A detailed (actual) case study that shows how one organization applied the principles and guidelines to reduce lead time from an average of 28 days to 4 days

Unlike "tool books" or "pocket guides" that focus on discrete tools in isolation, this text use a single comprehensive service work example that integrates all three maps, and illustrates the insights they provide when applied as a set. It contains how to procedures for creating each type of map, and includes clear-cut guidance for determining when each type of map is most appropriate. The well-rounded understanding provided in these pages will allow readers to effectively apply all three types of maps to make work visible at the organization, process, and job/performer levels.

*The Seven principles are integrated into Version 3 of the body of knowledge used for Lean certification by the ASQ/AME/SME/SHINGO Lean Alliance. This is the first publication of those principles and guidelines.

5A High Impact but Simple BookJun 20, 2011
By J. Cheema "JC"
Mr. Damelio has done it again! I have been looking for a basic book on Process Mapping for quite some time because one of my client companies till recently used lengthy and complicated process documentation which had been predominantly text based- sometimes difficult to understand. I obtained a copy of "The Basics of Processes Mapping" the day it was out because I have used first edition of this book for a long time. I developed a workshop based on this book for the line supervisors and group leaders on the shop-floor and made it a mandatory reading for all participants. So far, we have converted some key processes from text based to diagram based documents, the results have been great. I will strongly recommend this book to people working in the areas of "Process Visualization" and "Process Simplification". Although the book's title is "The Basics..." yet experienced professionals will find quite a few interesting ideas and get help in fine tuning process mapping concepts. The book explains all common kinds of process maps in simple and easy-to-follow instructions.

5A Wonderful ResourceDec 27, 2011
By Deborah F Titus
Robert Damelio's newest book has replaced his first edition as my go-to resource for process mapping. It's chock full of great information both those new to process design and management and seasoned professionals will find very useful. I especially like the step-by-step guidelines for creating relationship maps, cross-functional process maps, and flowcharts. They are easy to understand and follow. Finally, Chapter 7 - Seven Principles to Improve Workflow - really pulls everything together by providing a knowledge-work process improvement case study. I highly recommend this book. I will be referring to it before and during each and every process improvement engagement.

5A Simple and Easy to Read Book on Process MappingDec 10, 2011
By Michele A. Cohen
I think Robert Damelio did an excellent job at explaining Process Mapping and how it works, in a very simple and basic way, even to someone who has not done process maps before. The graphics in this book are wonderful, and his words are very easy to follow. I highly recommend this book.

5Basics of Process Mapping 2nd EditionMay 24, 2012

Continues to be my go-to reference manual for all things process related. Robert does an excellent job describing the elements of not only creating the maps but understanding and improving the work. Integrates well as a reference book to support lean and Lean Six Sigma projects.

5Essential For Process ImprovementMar 12, 2012
By C. Humphrey
I've used the approaches in Mr. Damelio's first edition for many years in my process improvement efforts. This 2nd edition has great additions, especially regarding applications of Lean-thinking to process mapping and process improvements. The book is written so that it's easy to use in mapping service or knowledge work processes. He provides an easy-to-understand overview on how to "think" about work, and why mapping its processes is beneficial. The subsequent chapters on relationship maps, cross-functional process maps, and flowcharts are written clearly and are easy to understand for those new to process mapping. They also serve as an excellent reference to those more experienced. The final chapter is a new chapter on the "Seven Principles to Improve Flow", and it takes the basics to a new level. Here, the author takes one of his actual client engagements and illustrates how process mapping techniques and Lean-thinking principles improved the process. This is a must-have book for anyone training, leading, or participating in process improvement or process management.
