In seeking to place the study of women in Africa in the mainstrem of feminist writings, the contributors to Patriarchy and Class argue for a materialistic mode of production analysis. Covering a wide range of areas and time periods, they address such issues as mode of production, reproduction, and domestic labor, playing particular attention to both the interaction between class and gender and the notion of patriarchy. Although by no means agreeing on prcise theoretical formuations, they are united in addressing the fundamental problems of conceptualization within the neo-Marxist -feminist framework.
