Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), though other themes, including targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Available in over 20 languages, Taschen's Basic Art series offers budget-minded readers quality books on the greatest artists of all time. The neat, slick format and nice price tag make Basic Art books perfect for collecting. Every book in the Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions a concise biography

Good overview, good valueMar 29, 2008

Like the other Taschen Basic Art series books I've seen, this provides a good introduction to Johns's work, covering his career through the present day. At only 96 pages, including a large number of color reproductions of his works, it is a quick read, but it also is far from comprehensive, of course.
For the price and quality, it offers a very good value to the layman seeking to learn more about the artist's work.

The Business of the Eye, Jasper Johns by Barbara HessFeb 15, 2011
By aoc Great book about John's life and his thinking in relation to his art. Some good images of his work, showing the progression during his painting years. Tis worth having if you are interested in Abstract Painting and even Abstract Expressionism as Hess makes reference to John's influences by the Expressionists era in the book. According to Hess, John's work argues against the expressionist's concept of emotion within the images and he paints specifically from a non-emotive abstract perspective because of them.
Technically tis an easy read and very interesting.

A simple, but very good beginning.Aug 31, 2010
By crg531 This 96 page book is printed on high quality, glossy paper. It holds a decent amount of pictures of Jasper Johns' paintings: typically 1 to 2 per page. Mixed in with the pictures are writings that range from explaining his paintings in laymen's terms, to bits and pieces of his biography. All in all this book is a rather simple, but very good beginning to a great American painter and his work.
